For this project, we diverged onto the route of a commercial space. As a woman centric space, we made sure to infuse the sphere with elements of warmth, and aesthetic diversity that amplify its distinctness. The space is all about old-school nostalgia, while showcasing Karachi’s unique past- the golden days of the 60s and 70s as portrayed through the checkered tiles, curved forms and colors. The space makes use of semi-sphere windows and doors, with specially designed terrazzo floors. To showcase the diversity of products, we added shelves with gold metallic accents propped up against large mirrors, illuminated by natural lighting in the day, and lights from black aesthetic metallic lights after hours. A beautiful turquoise-green wall rejuvenates the space on one side.

The key features of retro shapes and forms that dominate the space highlight its unique character, as well as the personalities behind it. An intentional intervention elucidates the femininity of the space, to emphasize the women-centric force behind the space. This is paralleled especially in the design of the bathroom, with oval mirrors and checkered floors, in bold metallic accents and black hanging lights. The dressing room highlights these features more subtly, with retro vibes, specially selected artwork and checkered tiles. The space encompasses positive female energy, and makes sure to emphasize it.

Wooden staircases lead the way up to the first floor of the space, largely bathed in hues of pink lighting emanating from a neon sign that reads “hello gorgeous.” The space instantly welcomes its visitors into the folds of warmth and comfort, as well as confidence. Set against a contrast of wooden flooring and terrazzo tiles, once again, shelves with metallic accents showcase different products on one side, while curvilinear wall patterns with pink paint dress the dining area and café on the other side. Marble tabletops, curvilinear pink dining chairs, and black metallic hanging lights make for an ideal spot for meetings, friend meet-ups or a study spot. On the opposite side, turquoise armchairs sit facing each other in swaths of LED lights, with a wall aesthetically decorated to capture any eye. Turquoise-green walls once more dominate the space, with more dining tables laid out in a spacious manner for mobility, comfort, and privacy. We amped up the space with a cozy rug and artwork, infusing some more warmth into an already aesthetic space. The art wall, a very special feature of the space was done by Hussain Ahmed- a graffiti artist who dedicated it to his grandmother. The rose signifies life, feminism and a love for tradition.

The outdoor of the space mirrored the display of femininity indoors, with a combination of retro arched windows, pink balcony, and floral paint. Every aspect of this design process was intentional and conscious, handpicked to put forth the ethos behind not only the space, but behind the women who worked hard to bring the space to life- a space that translates into a fun and casual, yet safe space for women.
